We have been hearing some questions about SC-USAW and I would like to try to answer some of them for everyone.
1) What makes SC-USA Wrestling different from other wrestling organizations in the State and why is the Membership Card more expensive than others?
A) SC-USAW is associated with USA Wrestling. A portion of the Membership goes to USAW, secondary Insurance and SC-USAW. USA Wrestling is the National Governing Body for amateur wrestling and has to report to Congress on issues concerning wrestling; for example Title IX, as well as the IOC , keeping wrestling in the Olympics as well as being a major leader in the UWW (United World Wrestling: formerly FILA). USAW must field an Olympic and World Teams.
2) What does the insurance cover?
A) It is secondary coverage for USAW Members, while traveling to and from practice, tournaments and USAW events. It will NOT cover injuries that occur at events sanctioned by other organizations.
3) Does SC-USAW only do Freestyle and Greco-Roman?
A) SC-USAW primary focus is Olympic styles but we do have Folkstyle in Ironmans and June 17th there is a Folkstyle at West Ashley HS. USA Wrestling host National and Regional Folkstyle Events also has been tasked to introduce American Folkstyle to the rest of the World in hopes of one day make it an Olympic sport as well.
4) Does SC-USAW run folkstyle during the High School season? No, with the exception of the Girl Challenges. There are agreements in place that SC-USAW wrestling season starts in March and goes through the summer.
5) Who is on the board of SC-USAW?
A) All Club presidents with Active USAW Sanctioned Clubs and have voting rights. Go to www.southcarolinawrestling.com for a list of officers.
5) Are SC-USAW financials published for the public to view ?
A) No. We were advised not to do it by USAW and it is against their policies. Board Members and Officers get financial information at Meetings. Meetings are held at High School States, Southeast Regions and around Labor Day.
6) Does SC-USAW pay Officials; and their travel?
A) SC-USAW provides officials for local, Regional, National and International Events. Our Officials volunteer their time. SC-USAW pays each official $25 for each local tournament they work at the end of the season. Regional, National and International Tournaments the Officials get some travel, hotel and food once they get to the venue paid by USAW and not SC-USAW.
7) What is the split of entries fees for tournaments?
A) Out of a 2 style (Greco/Freestyle) entry fee - $1 goes to our dual team and the rest is a 50/50 split between the host and SC-USAW.
8) Why does SC-USAW allow young High School age wrestlers to Officiate?
A) Since the pay scale was listed in the answer above, we do not get a lot of parents or coaches volunteering to learn. All of our officials are part of the USOWA (US Officials Wrestling Association). USAW Officials. We encourage high school age wrestlers to participate because it helps them learn the rules and how they are interpreted so they can perform better at higher level tournaments. We also accept parent and coaches who want to volunteer to officiate. All Coaches are strongly encourage to officiate and Tournament Host are expected to provide at least one official (Mom, Dad , Coach or Wrestler).
9) Has SC-USAW ever paid for an official to go to the Olympics?
A) No. We have had some Officials to volunteer to go to help out, but they have paid that out of their pocket.
10) Where does SC-USAW money go?
A) For local tournaments SC-USAW provides (pays) all medals (including The State Double Championship Belts), trackwrestling and this year sanctioning fees for tournaments. Entry Fees for all Dual Teams. Entry Fees for those that qualify for Fargo by attending 3 SC-USAW Tournaments. We also assist in helping Coaches to go to Silver College (USAW National Coaches Education Program). Also, $25 gas reimbursement for the Officials for local events. Remember, most of our officials live in Columbia and Charleston and this year most of our tournaments have been in the Upstate.
11) Why does SC-USAW not show a wrestler Matrix?
A) Because we use Madison Block Weights (pool weights) with the exception of the State Tournament.
12) Who has the right to threw someone out of a Tournament?
A) Any SC-USAW Official which includes the pairers. So that includes The lady behind the computer at the head table, the fat guy walking around trying to make sure everything is going well and answering questions, as well the officials working a mats, tournament director (host) and security. Remember they do not need to say hello (yellow card) to say goodbye (red card).
USA Wrestling has started a database for coaches and people who get yellow/red cards. If you get to many you can lose your right to coach.
13) Has South Carolina ever had a Olympic or World Team Wrestler?
A) Yes, Ike Anderson from Lower Richland High School in Columbia was a 1988 Greco Olympian.
2010 Junior World Team Member Brittany Delgado and 2014 University World Bronze Medalist Brieana Delgado (Delgado's from Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, SC). With SC Ties - After the 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Sara McMann moved to SC, 2000 Olympic Silver Medals and 1998 and 2007 World Team Member Sammy Henson went to Clemson University. 1984 Bronze Medalist (for England) Noel Loban went to Clemson University.
14) My kid wants to go to Duals or Fargo but we can not afford it, can SC-USAW help?
A) SC-USAW can provide a Selection Letter which can be taken to business for donations. This year we have had a couple of fundraising opportunities by selling concessions at the "Well" and will be selling fireworks over the 4th of July starting June 23. We have concession sales opportunities in the UpState, Columbia and Charleston. If you want to help volunteer to fundraise please contact me or Brandy Green.

Any question please feel free to email me at delb4s@aol.com and I will answer here on this post.

How are board members elected and how long does their "term" last
The Board is an Advisory/Executive Board. Which gives guidance and direction to the Officers. Members are club presidents, so that is up to the individual clubs. Board President and Vice President are elected every two years. They alternate years.

Officers run day to day operations. Officers are elected every two years. Some positions come up for election on even years and the others on odd years. Like Congress, we do not have term limits. We encourage club presidents to be there to vote. What usually happens the same people show up at the meetings and they end up being re-elected to multiple positions.

Our elections are held at our Annual Meeting around the beginning of September. We will have meetings periodically though out the year. Next one will be at South East Regions.

You must be part of an active sanctioned USA Wrestling club which you and your club members attend a minimum of at least 3 Tournaments as well as attend the meeting to be elected. You cannot have a paper club and show up and say I want to run for State Chairman. (We want people who are actively involved and care about wrestling and just not their own kids/club.)

We are in the process of creating new officer positions; Event Director, PR/Media Director(s)-this could be to different people- and Fund Raiser Director.

What positions will be up for election at the September meeting? Do you have enough volunteers to fill these new positions, or will it fall on the same individuals who are already stretching themselves thin?

I have to verify which ones are up for this year. we can always use more volunteers.
