If Chelsea Wilkinson had released the ball as she was falling and rolled it towards the catcher, would it have been legal ?

I'm not sure of the rule, but, I felt bad for her. It looked to me like her spike may have caught in her shoe strings and tripped her. TV commentators were saying her ankle gave out, but, I thought she just tripped. You couldn't help but feel badly for her after they brought her in just to get that one out. Strange ending to say the least.

I slow motioned it. Her lead toe caught her heal of her other cleat and she tripped herself. While doing so and falling forward, her drag toe came up in the air about 8" or more, so probably would have called illegal for crow hopping or leaping even if she had released the ball. However, that would have been a judgment call with umps not seeing replay so if she had rolled the ball as she fell, maybe they would have called it a ball. Poor girl; heck of a way to lose.
