Actually, you don't see them using the shields; they may have been walking them out to the field to use on the ground; some schools use them on the ground. All we see in this picture is a kid carrying the shield; you can see the other shield already laying on the ground.

That was my first thought, Looks like the player is carrying the shield to put down or to a station...Doesn't show anyone hitting it.
