The Chapin Eagles held their annual Spring Game this past Friday night. Attendance was good and atmosphere was rocking as the Eagles split into Offense and Defense to scrimmage for over an hour. Here's an brief report:

QB Logan Bailey has the Zone read down to a science. They had quick whistles on the QBs all night, but he would move around in the pocket and repeatedly fire bullets downfield. Running has never been an issue for Bailey (if anything he's stronger and faster), but his passing was incredibly accurate. He attempted a couple dozen passes and had about 2 dropped, maybe 1 broken up, and only one missed his target - slightly underthrown. This kid is the total package. His back-up is rising Soph Trad Beaty. Not as shift as Bailey, Trad is a TALL QB with enough athleticism to make the offense work. He throws a terrific ball and seemed to be in full control of the offense after only a week of practice(baseball playoffs). Surprise of the bunch was rising Soph Case Barber. I didn't even know he was working with QBs but came out with the 3rd string and ran the Zone to a "T". Much smaller than Bailey, but has that dangerous shifty running style that makes him hard to hit and contain. Also completed several passes. Was very impressed by this curve ball from the staff.

At RB, the Eagles are certainly a committee. Seemed like they had 10 kids take a handoff friday night. Ben Fischer looked the most polished, but newcomer Carver Koon could push for quality time. Another baseball late-comer, was rising Soph Kareem Bowers who only got 2 touches but both were nice runs for good gains. Dreher, Bickley and Rice all got time. Rice is brandnew and looks like he has the potential to be very dangerous, he just has to get stronger. You could tell he hasn't been in the Eagles strength program.

The WRs was the Ben Flowers and the H-Backs Show. Flowers is a small, quick kid that has struggled with his hands on JV the last couple of years, but has that burst of speed that Chapin doesn't traditionally have. However, Friday night he was sucking up everything thrown his way - and there were a lot of balls thrown at him. The aforementioned Barber also got some quality time at the solt receiver and hauled in several passes. The H-Backs of D-I prospect Will Register, future star Khale Rhames and Spring surpise Bryce Harrington showed great blocking and catching ability. This position looks to be blooming in this offense with the exact right kind of athletes coming through Chapin to play this position. There were several other kids that caught passes, too at WR spot... LOTS of people got reps Friday night.

OL is obviously a work in progress for the Eagles. Their inexperience was glaring in the first period - 1st string "D" versus 2nd string "O". They have a lot of work to do - and to be quite honest, growing-up to do. The OL is young at nearly every position. There is certainly some size there and a lot of potential, but they will need to bond as a unit and continue working hard to shore up these slips. That's was summer and pre-season workouts are for.

On Defense, it looks like speed is the new motto for the Eagles. The DL repeated sprinted into the backfield early in the Spring Game. MUCH smaller than years past, they slanted, ripped and swam right into Beaty's lap during the 1st period. Once Bailey was in and able to move around, that seemed to nuetralize that "ears back" approach. However, they still occassionally caused problems even when their 2nd and 3rd rotation came through.

Chapin's strength lies in it's ILBs, OLBs and DBs. Flying to the ball, delivering bone jarring hits and shadowing WRS as they tried double-move after double-move. The DL - like the OL - is a youth movement, however with pure burst and tenacity, the defender is at a great advantage and it showed.

The LB's that shined the most were Garret Reinhart, Cory Bianco and Register (two-way starter). All played assignment football and if they got a hand on you, were sure tacklers. The DB's were - again - a by committee approach with the coaches rotating guys in constantly. Caleb White and Chandler Johnson had some memorable momments.

WACH Fox was on hand, too. Watch Cory Miller's breakdown here:

Bailey, Flowers and WR Evan Estridge all took part in Combines in May and put up pretty good numbers.

Bailey went to the Summerville session of the Shrine Bowl Combine and put up "eye candy" numbers:
40 - 4.71 (3rd fastest for QBs through 3 Shrine Bowl Combines)
Shuttle - 4.0 (Fastest for QBs through 3 Shrine Bowl Combines)
Broad Jump - 100" (Top 5 for QBs through 3 Shrine Bowl Combines)
185lb bench - 22 reps (by FAR the highest for QBs through 3 Shrine Bowl Combines)

Estridge went to Nike Regional:
40 - 4.8
Shuttle - 4.5
Vertical - 26.5"
Powerball - 36'

Flowers went to Nike Combine:
40 - 4.74
Shuttle - 4.6
Vertical - 29.5"
Powerball - 29'

Now time for Summer workouts with 7-on-7 in between. Chapin is getting bigger, faster and stronger than they've ever been. Go Eagles! Can't wait for Fall!

You guys have a foreign exchange student from Austria who will be there in June. He has played American football for 5 years in Austria for the Salzburg Ducks. My son is the head coach and played collegiately at Coastal Carolina (1st team All American). He also played for the New Orleans Saints and the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL. He tells me this kid will be a rising Freshman and is 6'8 250 and has the athleticism and size to be a major Div 1 prospect!!!

Pretty sure that WR you're talking about is named Joe Flowers. Not Ben.

However, that's a very good write up.

o_O;):D

I'm guessing it's all about a new identity... new attitude.... hence, the new look.

;)

As Cory Miller says, watchout for those Eagles.

:D
