Not going to happen. 5a is going to have less teams than the other classes to reduce the discrepancy. I'm hearing 32 teams in 5a and 1a and a even split amongst the rest.

Easley to 5A, and Pickens to 4A. Going to be a tough road for my flame. Half of the 1A schools should be consolidated with another school. Why are we keeping the doors open for anything with under 200 students.

Realignment
Classifications #'s
5A- 43 school Wando-Lugoff-Elgin 4,065-1614 The only things taken into account are: Numbers and Geographic Location. These are the only 2 considerations for each region in the state. We tried to keep each classification the same playoff format. This way each class is equal when it comes to going to the playoffs. We tried to get away from the idea of every team automatically qualifying, even though they have a losing record.
4A- 44 school Colleton- Brookland-Cayce 1592-1002
3A- 45 school Palmetto-Liberty 985-676
2A- 47 school Ridgeland-Mcbee 673-324
1A- 34 school St. John's- High Point 310-24
5A Playoffs: Top 4 teams from each region will automatically make the playoffs. This gives us 28 automatic qualifiers. The final 4 spots will be determined, like we have done in the past, using a resume type. Each year the number 1 overall seed will rotate to each region.
Region 1 Region 5
1-Hanna 1-West Florence
2-Westside 2- Spring Valley
3-Easley 3-White Knoll
4-Greenwood 4- River Bluff
5-Woodmont 5-Lexington
6-Laurens 6-Lugoff-Elgin The playoffs are based off a 10 game schedule. This allows teams to cross bracket with other regions.
Region 2 7-Sumter
1-Mann Region 6
2-Wade Hampton 1- Fort Dorchester The regions also continue traditional rivalries in the region.
3-Riverside 2-Summerville
4-Hillcrest 3-Ashley Ridge
5-Byrnes 4- James Island
6-Mauldin 5-Wando
Region 3 6- West Ashley
1-Dorman Region 7
2-Boiling Springs 1-Socastee
3-Gaffney 2-Goose Creek
4-Spartanburg 3-Stratford
5-Clover 4-Carolina Forest
6-Northwestern 5-South Florence
Region 4 6-Conway
1-Dutch Fork
2-Irmo
3-Rock Hill
4-Fort Mill
5-Blythewood
6-Nation Ford

What you have is basically the same thing we have now with school sizes, so why change classification system and basically keep the same thing? The HSL, principles, and AD were fully aware that travel would be an issue in 5A and that it might take a 2 year cycle before working out the kinks. The only real option to achieve what the new system is designed for is for 5A to be 32 teams, 4 regions of 8 teams and try and keep 1A about the same number. Then split 4A, 3A, and 2A evenly. In 5A the top 4 from each region make the playoffs.

They should have left it alone or went to 6As. They will destroy Class A D2 schools hope to be competitive in the playoffs. No way the Blackvilles etc compete regularly with Allendales and Bambergs and the spring sports will be worse.

I agree with most of this. I would keep 5A and 1A classifications smaller. The whole gist of this move was disparity in size. The 2nd most important aspect was travel. Maybe you put a little pressure on the big schools to not be so big by making them have to travel all over to play their same-sized schools. And 1A? I agree to a certain extent - they need to consolidate some of the tiny one's into a more feasibly competitive team. Even if they don't actually share the school building, they could share a team. That way, only the athletes would require travel accomodations to practice, games, etc. instead of every student having to drive 25-30 miles to school, every day, one way if they consolodated the actual school buildings.

Just my $.02.

Super large schools such as Wando and Dorman should look at splitting. Rural counties with 3 school districts and small schools (Bamberg and Denmark, Wade Hampton and Estill, Barnwell/Williston/Blackville) should consider consolidating into 1 school.

Horry County is to blame for Carolina Forest. They could easily adjust attendance lines to send kids to either Conway, Socastee, or Myrtle Beach.

42 is the only way 5A is going to work. Anything less is going to create some major travel issues for several schools

This is a good plan, with 42 teams. All these ideas about only having 32 or 34 in 5A won't work because you will have C. Forest and W. Florence sitting over in the Pee Dee/Grand Strand having to travel to Charleston or Columbia.

Um, no matter WHAT plan you suggest there will be faults. You cannot make EVERYONE happy.

Like some idiot who had Chapin playing down in the conference with the Aiken schools. Only problem was they would drive PAST three schools from other conferences to GET to Aiken. Just stupid....

o_O

I think I saw the plan you're talking about. In that one, should've just moved Airport to the Aiken schools and let Chapin be with the Columbia schools.

About 3 years ago Midland Valley was in a region with Airport, BC, L. Richland, AC Flora, Dreher which was tough enough from a travel standpoint but then Chapin forced their way into the region by threatening the HSL with legal action. If they put MV, NA, Aiken, and South Aiken together and made Chapin play in that region it would be a form of ironic justice. I do not think that will happen. Even if it did Chapin would probably threaten to sue again. I think OW might be the 5th team. With their location OW has to drive to Charleston, Columbia, or Aiken. Second choice would probably be Airport.

5A - Can move Blythewood to Region 2 to even out all regions or leave them in region 3 and let 1 more team qualify for the playoffs. Top 4 qualify for playoffs from each region in all sports.

Um.. that wasn't "Chapin".... pretty sure that story was all about Scott Early.

But let's not bring his name up in here...

;)

If travel is the major issue then the change should of never been made. AD and principles were very aware of the travel issue before voting on the change. Going to 42 teams does nothing to change the disparity in school sizes which is the reason they changed it in the first place.

You left out Westside.

I would put Hillcrest in Region 1 and Westside in Region 2. This would give you 2 Regions with 7 teams and 2 with 8 teams.

Anyone familiar with Texas high schools? I see stories all the time of schools letting out early because the have a 3+ hour ride for a game. Are these region games? Or is this just the playoffs?

Just curious.

Probably league games, that's a big state. They have there big division also and along with being part of the biggest division comes the travel!

Which is EXACTLY what I said above.... if Wando wants to have 4,000 students, then they can drive to Dorman or Boiling Springs or where ever to play the larger schools in the state.

If they don't want the travel, build another school and split 2K each.

Just sayin...

:D

Agree with you dacoach. Wando has 4000+ and Lincoln, just up the road, also in Charleston county, has 108 students.

Why would Hillcrest, Easley, and Hanna be in a region with York County teams? That just doesn't make sense, especially for other sports.

It does not, was not going to post that and I guess I did on accident.

It's my belief that Wando wants to be that big, better chance of winning across the board in all sports.

Really pretty simple. Either you have a 5A division with 32 teams and travel or go back to 42 or whatever and basically keep it the same.

BE is a private school and is not under CCSD. The school itself is located in Berkeley County and is in the attendance zone of Hanahan.

From my understanding, parents don't want Wando to split. It is all about that name and they think if the school splits, it won't be able to offer what it does now.

Well its in the works. East Cooper High is supposed to open within 5 years at the site of the old Wando high

What about this for 5A...any thoughts
