Is there something up with Hartsville from a sportsmanship standpoint?

I was at the Hartsville- Lugoff-Elgin game tonight.

I noticed a few things that got me thinking. I am not knowledgeable about high school football teams, traditions, or even routine practices. So I thought I would state what I observed and check with those here that might know.

1) The first thing I noticed that Hartsville stayed on the field in pre game warm ups a good 15 mins after Lugoff-Elgin's team exited the field. They both came on the field at almost the same time it seemed. I eventually noticed that the LE band was trying to come onto the field to do their pregame duties but was having to wait a long time. ( there were a few other groups trying to do the same because apparently it was homecoming and they had a few things going on.)

the PA announcer announced several times that the band was ready to do their part of the pregame. It seemed the PA person might be sending a message. Not sure. Finally, I saw at least 2 officials and what looked like some type of administrator go over to the Hartsville coaches. It appeared they were instructing them to wrap it up. I admit I am guessing but it seemed to be a big issue.

2) during the game I saw what looked like 2 instances of Hartsville players arguing or saying something to LE coaches. I would think that is a big no-no. But I don't know for sure. The officials saw it too and did some talking to the players.

3). I overheard someone in the crowd stating that Hartsville's Pep band was playing at certain times when they were not supposed to be playing. I had no idea but this person seemed pretty adamant that they were breaking some sort of protocols that other schools abided by.

I know Hartsvile Is a very good team. That was obvious. But I got to wondering if this was some sort of gamesmanship by the Hartsville team. I don't know.

unsportslike = overbearing bully posture .....carries over to all involved. fwiw,,, when coach gets too big for britches and lets too much bs get by you see downside. MB, like other, multiple year dominant HSFB programs exhibit some of that at home,,,but on the road Seahawks just show up and play. At our place most of the time....it's like Mike Tyson said...."everybody has a game plan until they get punched in the mouth "... ch

Homecoming is treated differently by every school. At schools with very good football teams or very intense Head Coaches, the pageantry of Homecoming NEVER interferes with the game. Every game is important, crowd is huge and football is FIRST.

At some schools, Homecoming runs the entire evening. Biggest gate of the year. Bonfires, parties, etc. Football team has to get off the field pre-game so the girls can be introduced, cars ride by, etc. Halftime is 20 minutes to give the crowns out. Heck, at some schools the players still escort the girls out and miss halftime adjustments and corrections.

Just different strokes for different folks.....

Now, as for the main point of the post of this thread....

Before Calbrese, Hartsville never shook hands after games. I had heard they were still doing that, but I haven't seen them in a while.

Hartsville plays very aggressive. They play through the whistle not to the whistle. Haven't been hearing anything about cheap shots or personal fouls from the coaches in the state, but they all say it's alway physical game and usually very.... chippy (word I would use)... when you play them. It's worse when they are home.

But, again, I stress that I haven't heard anyone say "dirty" or "illegal" or "intentional injuries" when talking about the Red Foxes. Their head coach is a tough SOB, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't run a program that encouraged that kind of blatant behavior.

And for the announcer telling them to clear the field.... that is something that the home team coach should have told Calabrese WELL in advance. A team is going to complete their warm-ups. Or perhaps the band director or Homecoming Coordinator would like to pay for the hospital expenses or a torn hamstring or other medical expenses....

:D

We once had to cancel a jamboree because of the weather. Despite several announcements to this effect, the coach of one team kept his players on the field going through their warm ups. I finally had to cut the lights off to get them to go home.
