Final 2015-16 Executive Committee Meeting Announcements & Updates

The South Carolina High School League’s Executive Committee met today to discuss topics to include playoff venues and upcoming changes for the 2016-17 school year. The 2016 football championship venues are as follows:

Classes A/AA: Benedict College; Columbia, SC
Classes AAA/AAAA/AAAAA: University of South Carolina; Columbia, SC

Times and dates for each championship game will be announced at a later date.

Other important announcements include:
All SCHSL coaches are required to complete the “Sudden Cardiac Arrest” course provided by the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) prior to the start of their sport season(s).

The SCHSL Executive Committee voted in support of the South Carolina Football Coaches Association recommendation to limit full contact practice during regular and post season play to 90 minutes per week. This initiative is supported by NFHS as well as the South Carolina Trainers Association.

The SCHSL has been informed by American Specialty- Mutual of Omaha Insurance of an increase for the upcoming school year’s catastrophic insurance for South Carolina student athletes. The following depicts the increase for each level, per student athlete:
Level Current 2016-18 Premium
High School 3.85 5.00
Middle School 1.80 3.00

This insurance coverage provides the quality of service we need and will not increase for two years. We have not experienced an increase in three years. The rate change will take effect July 1, 2016.

The “Anyone Can Save a Life” program is gaining momentum across the United States as school athletic programs are encouraging coaches, athletes and staff to follow the protocol provided in the training. The SCHSL staff will lead the charge by taking part in the training this summer.

Oceanside Collegiate Academy of Mt. Pleasant, SC, was approved as an at-large member for the coming school year. They will be a new public institution of learning with a projected enrollment of 600 high school students.

“I consider today’s final meeting of the 2015-16 school year to be one of the most productive as we filtered through various topics of concern for the coming school year. Our Executive Committee is 19 of the strongest educational minds in the state. They share the same goal and work tirelessly for an end result to benefit the whole student, both academically and athletically. We do our very best to serve the students in the best manner possible. Without bias or prejudice, states Jerome Singleton, SCHSL Commissioner.

“It is worth mentioning that we will welcome nine new executive members this summer. All are eager to tackle groundbreaking topics in 2016-17. I have faith that we will surpass our own goals for efficiency and effectiveness. I ask that you remain connected to us for more updates as we bring the spring sports season to a close in the coming weeks.”

Will be curious to see how that 90 minutes of contact will be policed.

And what is contact? Is hand drills for O-line contact? What about 7 on 7? One on one's with WR/DB? What about thud drills for LBs during Indy time? Is hitting a dummy that another player is holding considered contact?

I can't imagine that will fly in football....

Are y'all hearing this is a done deal? Or they still "encouraging" teams to do this?
