FLORENCE — South Florence softball team’s surprising season came to an end Wednesday.
Wando scored three runs in the first inning and held off a late Bruins rally for a 7-4 victory in an elimination game in the Class AAAA Lower State playoffs.
In the seventh, the Bruins got it to 7-4 on Chasity Drummond’s sacrifice fly and a Wando throwing error. But Wando’s Alyssa Heinrich retired the last two batters with the tying run on deck for the victory.
Wando (23-9) advances to Friday’s lower state championship at Summerville. The Warriors, 0-4 against the Green Wave this season, will need two wins to advance to next week’s week state championship series.
“It seems like it always comes down to some point in the playoffs we are going to play them,” Wando coach Steven Legette said. “We know them, they know us well. They had the advantage on us this season. Hopefully, we can get some breaks against them.
“To be in the final four in the state, I think there are a lot of teams that want to be in this position.”
Virginia Moore, Kayla Bannister and Heinrich each had two hits to lead Wando. Amber Watson added a two-run double in the first inning to give Wando a 2-0 lead.
Bannister came through with a two-run single in the fourth to give Wando a 5-0 lead.
Heinrich gave up nine hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out six in the complete-game victory.
Weaver led the Bruins with three hits and an RBI and also took the loss on the mound. The right-hander gave up 10 hits, five earned runs, walked two and struck out two.
Ashlyn Flowers added two hits and scored a run for the Bruins.
