Helen Maroulis was a World champion at 55 kg in 2015 in Las Vegas, and had represented the USA at this weight class at the World Championships for six straight years. In 2016, Maroulis dropped to 53 kg and won the Olympic title in 2016. Now in 2017, Maroulis is expected to skip right past this weight class and move up to 58 kg for the World Team Trials. A factor is that 55 kg is one of the two current non-Olympic weight classes in women’s wrestling.

The most recent U.S. World Team member at this weight class was Sarah Hildebrandt, who won the Team Trials event in New York last November and went on to place 10th at the 2016 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in December. Hildebrandt defeated Olympian Kelsey Campbell in the semifinals of the Trials, 2-0, then stopped Whitney Conder in the best-of-three championship series. Conder is expected at 53 kg in Las Vegas, a weight where she has won three U.S. World Team berths.

Hildebrandt won two WCWA College National titles for King University, before becoming a USOTC resident athlete. She has won gold medals at the Pan American Championships two times. In January, she had a great performance on the way to a silver medal at the respected Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia.

Campbell, who beat Maroulis in this weight class to make the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team, heads into the World Team Trials as the 2017 U.S. Open champion. It was her third career U.S. Open title. For the 2016 Olympic Trials, Campbell wrestled at 58 kg and upset Alli Ragan in the finals series. The USA did not qualify to compete at the 2016 Olympics at 58 kg so Campbell did not go to the Rio Games.

One of the veteran stars of the U.S. Women’s program, Campbell competed on World Teams in 2010 and 2011, placing fifth in the world in 2010. She boasts numerous medals at international events. Campbell combines skill and experience with an ability to wrestle well in the big events.

Looking to push Hildebrandt and Campbell is 2017 U.S. Open runner-up Jacarra Winchester, who was third at the World Team Trials event in New York in the fall. Winchester has been consistent in recent years, placing second in the U.S. Open twice and third one time. Winchester was third in the 2014 University World Championships, the same year she won a University Nationals title. She won a WCWA College title for Missouri Valley in 2015. She has the skill set and experience to push for a place in the finals.

2015 Junior World bronze medalist Becka Leathers won the University Nationals at 58 kg in March, but is projected to drop down to 55 kg for the World Team Trials. Leathers was the U.S. Open runner-up at 58 kg, as well. A 2016 WCWA Nationals champion for Oklahoma City, Leathers left school this year and is training full-time at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. In January, she won the Dave Schultz Memorial International at 55 kg and scored wins over both Campbell and Winchester.

A strong star from the college ranks is Dominique Parrish, who was third at the 2017 U.S. Open. Competing for Simon Fraser, Parrish was second at the 2017 WCWA Nationals and third at the 2016 WCWA Nationals. A high school star from California, she won a 2014 Junior Nationals title, and a pair of California CIF high school state titles. She was second behind Leathers at the University Nationals at 58 kg this year.

Megan Black of McKendree University won the 2017 University Nationals at 55 kg, defeating her college teammate Gabrielle Weyhrich in the finals match, with both qualifying for Las Vegas. Black was seventh at the 2017 U.S. Open up at 58 kg, but should have a better chance to make an impact down at 55 kg. Black is a two-time WCWA Nationals runner-up for McKendree, and started her college career at King, where she was seventh in the 2014 WCWAs. An Iowa native, Black boasts a Junior Nationals title back in 2012.

Placing fourth at the U.S. Open was veteran Deanna Betterman, who has placed fifth in the World Championships two times. Last year, she competed at 53 kg at the Olympic Trials. At this weight class, she was fourth in the World Team Trials event in November. Betterman has much more experience than the other athletes, something that gives her an edge in the close bouts.

Returning to the mat after a few years away from competition is Brieana Delgado, who was fifth at the U.S. Open. Delgado was a four-time WCWA All-American for Oklahoma City, and is now serving as one of the coaches there. She had a strong 2014 season, placing third at the U.S. Open and second in the Phase II World Team Trials up at 60 kg.

Qualifying through the U.S. Open were college wrestlers Gabrielle Weyhrich of McKendree, who was sixth, and Rachel Archer of Oklahoma City, who was seventh. Archer was fourth at the WCWA Nationals this year at 123 pounds.

Ronna Heaton, a 2015 Cadet World champion and 2016 Cadet World silver medalist, qualified for this weight class by making last year’s Junior National Team. She competed at the 2016 Junior World Championships as a replacement for Leathers, who became ill at the time. Heaton tested herself at the Senior level this winter at the Klippan Open in Sweden.

Earning her spot in the field through the 2017 WCWA Nationals was Hanna Grisewood of King University, who was third at 123 pounds this year. A three-time All-American in college, Grisewood was fourth in both the 2014 and 2015 U.S. Senior Open.

With the weight classes bunched together in women’s wrestling, there could be other athletes who qualified at either 53 kg or 58 kg who find their way into this weight class. The big question is whether a veteran like Campbell will be able to hold back young stars like Hildebrandt, Leathers and Winchester.
