Barry University men's basketball team announced the signing of five players under first-year head coach Butch Estes.
The
Buccaneers added three local players and former Hialeah Gardens High
School teammates who won the Florida Class 8A state championship in
2012, along with a pair of junior college transfers.
Barry signed 6-foot-5 sophomore forward Yunio Barrueta, a Hialeah
Gardens product who spent last year at East Tennessee State. The Bucs
also signed two of his high school teammates, 6-5 forward Adrian
Gonzalez and 6-6 power forward/center Alvaro Simoza, both incoming
freshmen. The Bucs also signed 6-10 sophomore power forward/center Matt
Gamberoni and 6-2 junior forward Savad Garner.
Garner, a Fountain Inn, S.C. (Hillcrest HS), native, averaged 17 points and 7.9
rebounds as a sophomore at State College of Florida-Manatee last year.
Garner scored in double figures in 27 of the 28 games he played. He had a
season-high 26 points on 13 of 24 shooting and matched a season-best 13
rebounds at Polk State College. He scored 22 points in four other
games. Garner spent his freshman season at Newberry College, where he
averaged 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 53.3 percent from
the field. He scored 32 points and had eight rebounds in a 122-102 win
at Mars Hill. Garner had 23 points and 11 boards in the season-opening
107-87 win over Salem International.

Oklahoma
State has signed four players to National Letters of Intent in the
sport of men's basketball, it was announced today by head coach Travis Ford. Three high school seniors and a junior-college sophomore will join the Cowboys for the 2013-14 season.

Gary Gaskins[/B]
is a 6-10 forward/center originally from Beaufort, S.C., but is
currently a sophomore at Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Fla.
After averaging 12.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocks as a senior at
Beaufort High School (Class of 2008), he joined the Air Force. He enrolled at Brevard
as a freshman in 2011, and this season, Gaskins is averaging 13.4
points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in six games while shooting 69.2
percent from the floor. He chose OSU over UAB, Marshall and Nebraska
after receiving recruiting interest from Oklahoma, South Florida,
Wichita State and Arkansas.

"Gary
Gaskins is a player that we saw play this summer and loved his
athleticism and his presence around the rim," said Ford. "He's a guy
that might be the fastest guy on our court, but can also put his elbows
above the rim. He's a really athletic shot blocker that can score around
the rim. His best days are ahead of him. He took a little break (after
high school) and went into the military. Talking to his coaches, I think
that by the time he's done here, he could really have a good career.
He's really excited about coming to Oklahoma State. He brings a big,
physical rebounding and shot-blocking presence that we desperately
need."

An interesting article on Gary Gaskins and his path to a Division I opportunity.

It takes determination to get from one place to another.

Gary Gaskins is a 23-year-old hoops signee at Oklahoma State.

If he has a sense of accomplishment today, it's because he took the road less traveled.

Far less traveled.
Coming out of Beaufort High School in South Carolina, playing
basketball was the only option. He and his father traveled to NCAA
Division II schools for tryouts, called coaches and did everything to
get a look. Yet, Gaskins received only marginal interest from small
programs.

"After high school, I thought I was done," he said.

Gaskins shifted his focus in other directions and found resistance.

From the military to technical college, a
mechanic's shop and a moving company, Gaskins tried it all and
everything stopped short.
