I'm only familiar with 4A teams, upstate mostly (actually seeing the team play)
in no order, who I see winning alot of games returning key players who already had playoff success:
Byrnes
Fort Mill
Gafney
Boiling Springs
North Augusta
Spring Valley
Summerville

who can make a title run from down south other than NA or Summerville?

I will provide a more detailed opinion as the season gets closer. Until proven otherwise, State Championship belongs to upstate. Summerville had a chance to steal one last year, but just did not get it done.
NA - had a good season, but departed PO early. Was a young team, so I expect to see them return and go deeper in PO.
AR - Starting to sound like a broken record here. ANOTHER new coach; that is 4 coaches in 4 yrs. They have good talent, but not enough to overcome the revolving door of coaches.
Coll Cnty - Back to the drawing board. P who kept them in most games is now playing in college.
Fort Dorchester - Will also have a new coach. New coach brought on an ass't that if he stays will help this team improve quickly.
Summerville - This could be the end of their run. P/C are both headed to C of C and SS will also be moving on to coll ball. CF is VERY talented. JV ball has not lived up to expectations so I think this may be their last chance for a few years.
Wando - Always seem to have a good season and come up short against Summerville.

Most discussions on High School softball, at the 4A Level, want to focus on teams and players. I like to watch what regions in this SCState are doing. If your team is from a strong region, the chances of a state champion for a team from those regions is quite a bit greater than from a less successful region. Mostly because the strongest regions play better teams day in and day out. Tight tough games become the norm, and to get the ultimate goal, a 4A team, regardless of the team or players names, must figure out how to win the tough games on a regular basis.

Last year Region III-4A showed to be the dominant in the SC State. The previous 2 years before that, Region II-4A was dominant. For all of those three previous years, Region VIII-4A, produced an extremely competitive opposition team in the State Championship series.

In that vein, the highest expectations for a 4A State Champion is most likely to come from Region III, II, and VIII. Until another Region, or specific team storms the gate, like Region III did last year. Or a very special team from a different region with a dominant pitcher, or player simply takes over.

One other factor, if you observe recent history, is who has a Senior pitcher. In the last half decade or so, the 4A teams with senior pitchers have won the 4A state title. There is something about a veteran pitcher, during crunch time, elevating and putting her team over the top. So for those with senior pitchers, and tell all who you are. Take note about what history is telling us.

The national story for SC high school softball at present remains however with the nationally ranked 3A Union County Yellow Jackets. Discussions for how they may fare on the 4A level is for another day. Because at this early stage it can be important for the SC State to embrace, respect, what Union County has done. For promotion of that accomplishment is good for all the softball players in South Carolina to have a team in the national discussion.

Fort Mill, SC made the final 4 in the Upstate (4th Upstate) last year. Welcome to the dance.

Again, history is so very, very wise. Looking at history, future SC 4A State Champions usually do the "hang near the top" the previous year. Clover did so (2015 Champ, 2nd Upstate previous), Byrnes did so (2014 Champ, 2nd Upstate previous), Boiling Springs did so (2013 Champ, 2nd Upstate previous). Now it may be time for Fort Mill to do so. And can they finish?

Who knows. Summerville has hung near the top (2nd State 2015, 2013) for a while also.

To Union (2015, 2014 Champ) What they did last year was well deserved, astounding. Took on, seeked, the best competition possible. Last year was tops for them. This year is another year for all. The 3A group is challenging. Union county in the north. Hartsville (2015, 2014 2nd place) in the south. No matter what happens, Hartsville will have a say also.

it will be interesting to see what the schedule makers have in store.

Be careful with the stacked with D1's ideas. Depth seems to rule in HS softball, as most good teams can stop a team stacked 1 to 4. It is the teams who go 1 to 9 that win championships. And the 5 to 9 players, who are not D1's, have more of an effect on the outcome than any.

All good teams in SC are stacked 1 to 4.
