Eisenhower was coming into office (Since then we have had JFK, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2, and Obama)
The Korean War was going on
The average house cost $9000
The average car cost $1700
Gallon of gas cost .20
The average person made about $3800 a year

Sports:

The Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in 7 games
The Detroit Lions beat the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Championship game 17-7 (The Superbowl would not show up for another 14 years)
